LASTING EVENTS & MEMORIES FROM
CAMPUS THUNDER
1951
"THEATRE DAZE"

Played four performances to a sellout audience on two evenings--

The pages turn to yet another uncertain world. The draft started once again and colleges feared for a drop in enrollment, but Campus Thunder '51 put on a new look with its first all original show complete in score by Sine Neary. The fourth edition brought us into a four-night performance with a complete sellout on our Friday and Saturday nights, not to mention a near sell out on the remaining evenings.

Our Genie in the person of Arnie Saperstein, celebrated a surprise brithday party given him by the cast two evenings prior to opening night, but to a sorrowful crowd, Arnie was in an automobile accident the following day and could not appear at the Friday performance. As a true actor he was back for closing night.

Fifi was again played by Frank Caatellucci of the '50 edition fame, minus of course the famous strip tease. Making their swan songs in this edition were "Mr. & Mrs. Show Business" at UB, Stew and Gerry Baker, the only actors to have been in the first four editions of the Thunder shows. Stew and Gerry met in the first edition, were going steady in the second, were married in the third and had the starring roles in the fifty and fifty one editions. Truly a theatre romance.

The annual cast party was held at Eichner's Restaurant and thus for the first time we had s band for dancing. The alumni along with the Knights of Thunder presented "D" with a life size portrait of himself now hanging in the Little Theatre Building and the cast presented him with a typewriter. Pictures and ads showed themselves for the first time in 3 Campus Thunder program.

After three long years of waiting "VARIETY" thought we were worth a review so they sent a reported down to cover the show. We were very pleased and proud at our closing night performance to be honored by the most sought after man on Broadway, Mr. J. J. Shubert of the Shubert Theatre

For the first time anywhere a college had a SHOW TRAIN IN REVERSE, from New York City to Bridgeport. Many former alumni were present at the cast party and new also was the participation of more Knights and Alumni on the business and managerial staffs.

Top scenes of the "51 edition included: Metropolitan Atmosphere; Dressing Room Scene; Hazel and the dramatic presentation of State Street and Parisian Tempo.

Joyce Mathewson, pint size comedian from New Jersey, a new comer, stole the show in her role of "MISS FILL IN" the girl who rose from an intermission prop to become the star of the show. Joyce, by the way, tried out for many N.Y. Broadway shows after this performance in Thunder, "State Street" "I Want You" "Music Hall Days' "Gay Senorita" "Lady of Silver "Scale Song"
